Arnica for horses: benefits, use and when you need it

Arnica is one of the most widely used natural remedies for the recovery of a horse's limbs — but not all arnica is the same. Here is what it is really for, how to apply it and why the fat-soluble form makes the difference.

What arnica is and why it is used on horses

Arnica (Arnica montana) is a mountain medicinal plant known for centuries for its soothing and decongestant properties. Its extracts are traditionally used to relieve swelling, bruising and muscle tension — in humans as in animals.

In the sport horse, the limbs bear enormous loads: tendons, ligaments and muscle masses accumulate microtrauma and fatigue with every training session. Arnica is one of the most common topical remedies to support recovery and reduce swelling and tension after effort.

What arnica for horses is used for

Arnica is applied locally on the affected area and is indicated above all for:

  • Swelling and oedema of the limbs after work
  • Bruising and minor trauma
  • Muscle tension and fatigue
  • Recovery of stressed tendons and ligaments
  • Cool-down after competition and intense training
It is not a medicationArnica is a natural support for recovery, not a cure. In the presence of lameness, marked swelling or persistent pain, the first thing to do is always to consult the veterinarian.

Water-based vs fat-soluble arnica: the difference that matters

Most arnica gels and lotions on the market use extracts in a water-based solution. The limit is that water penetrates the horse's skin and coat with difficulty: much of the active ingredient stays on the surface.

Fat-soluble arnica is carried in a fatty base similar to skin lipids: it penetrates more deeply into the tissues, amplifying and prolonging the soothing effect compared with the standard water-based version.

For the same declared concentration, what changes the results is not only “how much” arnica there is, but how much of it actually reaches where it is needed.

Gel, lotion or arnica clay?

Arnica for horses comes in different forms. The gel is handy for a quick massage. The clay poultice — a clay pack enriched with arnica — combines two actions: the osmotic, remineralising action of the clay and the decongestant action of arnica, with a long contact time that prolongs the effect.

Miraclay's ClayPower is exactly this: a poultice based on Nocera Umbra clay with high-concentration fat-soluble arnica, designed for intensive recovery after competitions and in cases of marked swelling.

How to apply it

  • Clean and dry the limb: the clay adheres better on relatively dry skin
  • Spread an even layer of about 1–2 cm over the affected area, without massaging deeply
  • Let it work: for maximum recovery you can leave the poultice on all night (6–8 hours), with or without a bandage
  • Remove with lukewarm water the following morning

Can arnica for horses be used on humans?

This is a very common question: since products for horses often have higher concentrations, many people also use them on themselves. Be careful, though: some equine formulations contain ingredients (camphor, essential oils, menthol) not designed for human skin, and the concentration may be excessive. Always check the composition and, when in doubt, do not use them on wounds or sensitive skin.

Precautions and anti-doping

Can it be applied to open wounds?
No. Arnica should only be used on intact skin: never on wounds, abrasions or open lesions.
How often is it used?
After work or the most demanding competitions, and in cycles during periods of intense load. Alternate it with daily maintenance when there is no swelling.
Is it a doping agent?
Miraclay products based on clay and arnica are non-doping and compatible with the FEI and FISE anti-doping protocols.

In short: arnica is a valuable ally for the horse's recovery, provided you choose the right form. A poultice with fat-soluble arnica like ClayPower combines penetration, contact time and the action of the clay — the most complete way to bring arnica where it is needed.
