Why use mineral clay
The mineral clay pack made with Nocera Umbra clay is one of the most complete solutions for caring for the sport horse's limbs. It does not merely cool the tissues (like ice or cold bandages): it works actively by releasing minerals into the tissues, draining excess fluids and stimulating microcirculation.
The result is visible right after the first application: less swollen limbs, less heat, a horse that is more responsive the day after the competition. With regular use, the benefits build up over time: stronger tendons, faster recovery, a lower risk of chronic injuries.
What you need
- Miraclay clay pack (ArgiStrong or ClayPower Arnica depending on your needs)
- Lukewarm water and a sponge for removal
- A towel
- A spatula or gloves (optional but handy)
Step 1: Preparing the limb
Before applying the clay pack, the limb must be clean and relatively dry. If the horse has just sweated, remove the excess sweat with a towel. There is no need to wash the limb with shampoo β it is enough that there is no mud or coarse debris that could irritate the skin beneath the layer of clay.
Step 2: Application
Take a generous amount of clay with your fingers or a spatula. The ideal layer is about 5mm β thick enough not to dry out too quickly, but not so much that you waste product.
Spread it from the coronet (the base of the hoof) up to the hock on the hind limbs, or up to the knee on the forelimbs. The most important areas to cover are the flexor tendons (the back of the cannon) and the annular ligaments around the pastern bones.
There is no need to massage the clay in: spread it evenly and let it dry. Do not cover it with cling film or bandage it tightly β the clay pack needs to breathe in order to dry and exert its osmotic action.
“The first time, I was amazed by the difference between morning and evening. Clean, cool legs, with no lingering tension. Now it is a fixed part of our routine.” β Marco R., FISE Technician
Step 3: Contact time
The minimum effective time is 45 minutes. The ideal after training is 60β90 minutes. For overnight use (very effective after competitions), you can leave it on all night: 6β8 hours cause no problems to the skin. Avoid exceeding 12 consecutive hours so as not to risk excessive dryness.
- After light training: 45β60 min
- After intense training: 60β90 min
- After competition: all night
- Before training: 30β45 min (remove before starting)
Step 4: Removal
When the clay is dry, it comes off easily with lukewarm water and a sponge. No force or shampoo is needed β the clay dissolves and rinses away in a few seconds. Dry the limb with a towel before bandaging or putting the boots back on.
Recommended frequency
For a sport horse in regular training, the optimal frequency is:
- During the competitive season: 3β5 times a week, after every training session
- Before competition: the evening before (ClayPower Arnica) and on competition day if there are hours to spare
- After competition: immediately on returning to the stable, leave it on all night
- Winter maintenance: 2 times a week as a preventive routine
ArgiStrong or ClayPower Arnica?
ArgiStrong is the choice for the daily routine and maintenance. A balanced formula, pleasant to apply, with menthol that gives an immediate cooling sensation.
ClayPower Arnica is the choice for the more demanding situations: after an intense competition, marked swelling, difficult recoveries. The fat-soluble Arnica adds a significant anti-inflammatory and soothing component.
Many professional riders use ArgiStrong in their weekly routine and ClayPower Arnica during competition weeks and on days of intense training.
